The David B. Terk Foundation

The David Terk Legacy

The David B. Terk Foundation (Terk Foundation) is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization founded in 1992. The Organization was founded by its namesake, Mr. David B. Terk (1929-2000). A first generation American born to Russian-Jewish immigrants in 1929 in Fargo, North Dakota. He grew up humbly and learned the importance of family, generosity and and kindness from an early age. Terk was often referred to as “Nature Boy,” as he could frequently be found outside participating in pigeon racing events, collecting reptiles and snakes, and teaching the kids around him the importance of Nature. Terk’s family recalls hearing memories of David and his mother, Sadie, reading books in bed every night about birds and memorizing each one of Audubon’s watercolors. Terk remained an avid reader his entire life. Terk moved across the country several times as a young child until losing his mother at the age of 16. The loss of his mother devastated David.
After graduating from Schreiner High School, Terk joined the US allied Philippine Army, as he was still under the age of 18. He was awarded a prestigious honor from the Philippine President. After turning 21, Mr. Terk went on to serve our country in the infamous 9th Infantry of the U.S. Army during the Korean War (1950-1953) and was honored with several awards, including the Bronze Star for Valor. In addition to his military honors, Mr. Terk was the 64th man in the world to accomplish a “World Slam” in Big Horn Sheep Hunting. Mr. Terk traveled the world in his pursuit of this elusive sheep and finally accomplished the last hunt in Mongolia in 1998.

Like many veterans, Terk is remembered as a complicated man who did not boast or relay many stories of war to his family. Kimberly Terk, President of the Terk Foundation, often jokes that Mr.Terk thought of her as his “first born son” – keeping her close by his side while hunting, fishing, and participating in various outdoor activities. She learned the ropes from a young age. Yet, many of Mr. Terk’s stories as a military man remain a mystery. Instead, Mr. Terk’s legacy is more akin to the famous words of Gandhi – “My life is my message.” The Terk family wishes to carry the torch of Mr. Terk’s legacy by contributing to the causes dearest to his heart – cancer research, the performing arts, conservation, education, veterans and 2A advocate organizations.

Guides & Volunteers

Thomas [Cuatro] Dunnam

As a South Texas native and fightin’ Texas Aggie class of ’14, I have a passion for hunting, fishing, the United States, and supporting all those who have sacrificed for the good of this prosperous country. For that reason, it has been a pleasure to be a part of the Terk Tribe since its formation.

Cody Stevens

The outdoors has been an obsession of mine ever since I was little. Growing up in Texas, I was taught how to be an outdoorsman, to love our country, and to appreciate those who have served and made sacrifices for our nation. Being a guide for Terk Tribe has allowed me to express my gratitude for our nation’s heroes by sharing my love for the outdoors with them.

Dalton Baker

Born and raised in South Texas. I have a passion for the great outdoors, my country, and all those that have sacrificed for it. I have been with Terk Tribe from the beginning and what a privilege it has been. Hunting, fishing, and having a good time with good people is what it’s all about. If you agree then Terk Tribe is the place to be.

Mitchell Murphy

I grew up blessed because I was surrounded and taught by some of the greatest outdoorsmen to ever walk this earth. As I have gotten older I have really become aware of how my passion for the Great Outdoors has molded my life for the better. I feel it is both a duty and an Honor to pass this along to those who have sacrificed so much for strangers like me. The Terk Foundation has given me the ability to return the favor and I’m thankful every day for the opportunity.

Lane Moczygemba

I grew up with a great respect for the men and women who serve, instilled in me by hearing stories from my grandfather who served in the Marine Corps during WWII. That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to volunteer with Terk Tribe when I was asked. Nothing is more fulfilling than getting to serve these vets every year.

Michael Gomez

Michael Gomez is a Purple Heart veteran of OEF IX-X and Alumni of the 2017 Terk Tribe hunt. After becoming an alumni, Michael has continued to volunteer to forward the efforts of the Terk Tribe family. “I have seen many veterans open up in the blinds and find resolution to some problems they aren’t able to all about with others. There’s a real healing aspect to nature, hunting, and the family atmosphere you join, after becoming a Terk Tribe veteran!”

John Diaz

Being an outdoorsman has been in my blood since I was little, and it has formed me into the man I am today. It’s never just been about the hunt for me, more the comradery and meeting new people, sharing stories and building lifelong friendships. As a citizen of the greatest country there is, I believe it is my duty and honor to give back to the true heroes of the United States by sharing with them what I love to do most. What better way to do all the things I enjoy doing than to be a part of the Terk Tribe.
